- Summary
- Millions of children live a disadvantaged life in Nepal. There are about 2.6 million children between 5 to 16 years ofage, working as child labourers in almost all labour sectors. About 5,000 children surviveas street children. Though the cases of abuse are frequently reported (especially rape cases), the majority ofthe cases of child sex abuse go unreported due to social stigmatisation and inaction of lawenforcing agencies. Similarly, sex abuse of boys is completely ignored. Commercial sexual exploitation of children has become a critical issue in Nepali society. There are several incidences of exposing a child to pornography, using children forpornography and prostitution, use of children in oral sex, sodomy, of both boys and girlsby both Nepalese and foreigners. This report is one of 4 studies on child sex tourism in South Asia undertaken by ECPAT International. Objectives of the study were to gather information on the nature, scope and manifestations of child sex tourism in the Kathmandu Valley and Pokhara. The report is based on a 3 month research. The study highlights child sex tourism as an indistinct but emerging issue in Nepal. It analyses children as “at risk”, looks into push and pull factors involved with child sex tourism and recommends preventative measures to be taken.
