- Summary
- On grounds of growing evidence of the involvement of organized criminal groups in trafficking, the international community decided to expand the definition of trafficking and incorporate trafficking in all persons, while at the same time noting the increased vulnerability of women and children and their specific needs for protection and support. This was pursued through the elaboration of a Protocol to the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime. The protocol sets forth three purposes: 1) To prevent and combat trafficking in persons, paying particular attention to women and children; 2) To protect and assist victims of trafficking, with full respect for their human rights; and 3) To promote cooperation among States in order to meet these objectives.
