- Summary
- Despite all efforts in improving and harmonising data collection, currently still little systematic knowledge exists on the actual scope of the phenomenon of trafficking in human beings in the European Union and it‘s Member States. Previous comparative case studies did not reflect upon the fact that statistical data at hand do not lead to unambiguous results but would allow for a variety of different interpretations. Furthermore, these studies not always addressed the heterogeneity of data they have used and did not account for the underlying definitions and subcategories of the data in a transparent way. Thus the present study shows to what degree existing national datasets can be utilised for analysing the extent of trafficking in human beings on national and European level and marks out the range of statements possible about the extent of the phenomenon.
