Summary
The health consequences of sexual violence on girls are profound and lasting. In addition to the immediate physical injuries, survivors may have to face unwanted pregnancy; sexually transmitted infection, including HIV; and mental health problems such as posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression. These can have particularly serious consequences on girls. For example, unwanted pregnancy among girls can have an impact over and above those for adult women in that young girls are at higher risk of maternal and peri-natal mortality. In the particular context of Haiti, pregnancy can also result in girls' education being disrupted or in permanent exclusion from school
