- Summary
- On 10 December the German Refugee Organisation Pro Asyl submitted a petition to the European Parliament addressing the serious deficiencies of the European border regime from a human rights perspective. According to Pro Asyl, over the last 12 months more than 1500 people have died at the external border of the EU. The petition claims in particular that the operations of Frontex, the European border management agency, are in breach of refugee rights. Consequently, it calls on the European Parliament to put an end to Frontex activities which violate fundamental rights, to ensure that persons are rescued at sea and to guarantee refugees' access to fair asylum procedures in the EU. Pro Asyl claims that its petition has been supported by nearly 30,000 citizens and by human rights organisation from 17 countries across Europe.
