Summary
The main aim of this study is to achieve a more empirically founded and
quantitative understanding of the nature, scale, and recent evolution of irregular West
African migration to North Africa and Europe. This is pursued through an analysis
of data available from official statistics as well as the emergent policy and research
literature on this issue. On the basis of this analysis, this study will also evaluate
how policies to curb trans-Saharan and trans-Mediterranean migration have affected
migration patterns.
