- Summary
- The media often creates or reinforces stereotypical and negative images about people. In the context of human trafficking, moreover, when journalists wish to tell a story andput a face to a victim, they run the danger – albeit often inadvertedly – of victimizingthem further. Victims are often depicted as naïve, and socio-economic problems arereduced to portrayals of personal traumas. Furthermore, victims might be presented inan overly compassionate manner, confusing sympathy (pity) with real empathy(understanding) for the context and reality of their experiences.
