- Violence against women is complex and diverse in its manifestations. Its elimination requires a comprehensiveand systematic response by States, the United Nations, and all stakeholders. Local communities alsohave a responsibility for addressing violence against women and they should be assisted in doing so. Menhave a role, especially in preventing violence, and this role needs to be further explored and strengthened.Strong institutional mechanisms are required at national and international level to ensure action, coordination,monitoring and accountability.• States should take urgent and concrete measures to secure gender equality andprotect women’s human rights• The exercise of leadership is essential to end violence against women• States must close the gaps between international standards and national laws,policies and practices• States should build and sustain strong multisectoral strategies, coordinatednationally and locally• States should allocate adequate resources and funding to programmes to addressand redress violence against women• The knowledge base on all forms of violence against women should bestrengthened to inform policy and strategy development- The United Nations should take a stronger, better coordinated and more visibleleadership role to address violence against women• The resources allocated throughout the United Nations system to addressviolence against women should be increased significantly
