- Summary
- This collection of essays spans ten years (1984-94) of theoretical and activist work on prostitution and offers a critique of "prostitute" and "prostitution. " That critique touches on issues of migration, the right to asylum, street kids, and especially crucial to the volume the stigma attached to being a "whore" as an official and traditional mechanism of social control. Includes appendices which provide starting points for research (a questionnaire is included) and action (suggested political alliances between lesbians, sex workers, and 'Wives'). Reader's review: "Gail Pheterson's book should be the first port of call for those seriously interested in understanding the nature of sex work, 'trafficking in women' and human rights. The Prostitution Prism covers a wide range of issues including the 'whore stigma' and how it functions, migration, youth and health programs. If you are new to the term sex work and do not understand the first thing about policy relating to the sex industry and sex workers, The Prostitution Prism will give you the information you need in a clear format. If you are an experienced policy analyst or academic, the book will introduce you to new ways of thinking about debates which too often become bogged down by issues of morality and prejudice."
