Summary
Drawing on Oxfam America's and the Advocacy Institute's experience as progressive social change organisations, Advocacy for Social Justice offers a framework for understanding advocacy in today's globalising world. Above all, Advocacy for Social Justice celebrates the innovative and inspirational advocacy efforts that are already creating change in so many countries, in both the North and the South. Intended for the advocacy practitioner and trainer alike, Advocacy for Social Justice explores the elements of advocacy and offers a toolkit for taking action, comprehensive case studies, and hundreds of resource listings for hungry activists around the world. Building civil society and nurturing democracy has become part of mainstream development discourse. But while some NGOs are taking the lead in this work, others still lack the skills needed to assume new roles in policy advocacy for social and economic justice. Advocacy for Social Justice: A global action and reflection guide is a direct and interactive response to this growing need. The result of a major three-year collaboration between the Washington-based Advocacy Learning Institute and Oxfam America, this resource is the first comprehensive guide for worldwide social and economic justice advocates. Intended for the practitioner, trainer, and student of activism, it explores the elements of advocacy and offers a toolkit for taking action, comprehensive case studies, as well as hundreds of resource listings. The authors examine the question 'What is advocacy?', drawing on their experiences and a variety of case-studies, pinpointing the lessons that can be learnt from these experiences and looking at the role of advocacy in the 21st century. They discuss common advocacy skills to suggest a model for strategy development and skill-building. the latter part of the book contains over 200 pages of training resources, including much photocopiable material, for practical use in advocacy training. A detailed contact list and directory complete this valuable resource. A website supports the published resource with expanded directory material and background to the project as well as electronic files for the book itself.
