- UNTOC side event Empowering trafficking victims across borders: Access to Justice and Support Services
- Summary
On 14 October, VSE, LSI and VSA cooperated on a side event focusing on trafficking victims across borders and their needs regarding access to safe justice and support systems. The event featured presentations on best practices in supporting transnational victims within the criminal justice processes. Key topics included insights from the papers "Safe Justice for Victims of Crime", "National Framework for Comprehensive Victim Support" and “Assessment of the Principle of Non-Punishment: Collection of Case Law.”
The side event focused on the challenges faced by cross-border trafficking victims in transnational organised crime (jurisdictional issues, victim support, protection, and compensation). It highlighted the need for a victim-centered approach, detailing the UNTOC mandates on victim protection and assistance, including privacy, safety, and participation in criminal proceedings, as well as the issue of unconditional support, non-punishment and compendation.
