Summary
As people trafficking is one of the crimes that has only recently been the subject of legislation in Portugal, this study, commissioned by the research team at the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra, examines how this social problem manifests itself.  Portugal has adopted in early 2008 the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings, which expressly states the need to implement mechanisms to monitor anti-trafficking activities. This action demonstrates that Portugal is aligned with the international agenda and that it understands the changes that have been observed in some of the most inhumane types of crime.
