Summary
There are no reliable statistics on the occurrence of trafficking in human beings in general. This is especially true with regard to ethnic minorities such as Roma due to the absence of disaggregated data. It is estimated that thousands of women from Central and Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas are trafficked each year into and within the European Union. Despite the lack of
concrete official data about trafficking and exploitation akin to trafficking of Roma, the present research documented widespread perceptions that Roma are affected by trafficking in human beings and that Roma are significantly overrepresented among trafficked persons in some countries. The findings also indicate a lack of targeted action by State authorities to tackle this issue.
