Summary

The report is build on a comparative research project that look in to the role of migrants in the workforce in Canada, The UK, USA and Ireland. The goal of the report is to examine the following:

1)      the contextual factors influencing current and future demand for care workers in an ageing society, particularly migrant care workers;

2)      the experiences of migrant workers, of their employers, and of older people in institutional care

3)      the implications of the employment of migrant workers in the care of older people for the working conditions of the migrants concerned and for the quality of care;

4)      the implications of these findings for the future care of older people and for migration policy and practice.

The research project has been made as a result of the ageing of the population in many western nations, and the challenges this ageing pose to society. One of the challenges regarding the rapid growth of a senior population is the lack of native born care takers. This development leaves room for foreign caretakers to get jobs with in the health care institutions – already, migrants play a big role in the care of older people. The report includeds among others a discussion of migration policies and patterns, a description of the relationship between older adults and their migrant care workers, and perspectives of employers and workers on recruitment and employment.
