Summary
The development of indicators for the protection, respect and promotion of the rights of the child in the European Union by the Agency for Fundamental Rights of the uropean Union (FRA) aims at assessing the impact of Union law and policies that have been adopted so far, identifying their achievements and revealing their gaps on EU provisions for children. Their purpose is to enable EU institutions, Member States, and organisations and individuals concerned to develop appropriate legal and policy responses, which enhance the protection and promotion of children's rights by the EU. Accordingly, it is important to emphasise that these indicators are neither intended to scrutinise the Member States' implementation of their obligations under EU law, nor as another means of monitoring Member States' compliance with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The first is a task that corresponds to the European Commission as guardian of the Treaties, while the second is a task of the Committee on the Rights of the Child, which is the international body responsible for monitoring the implementation of the UN Convention.
