Summary
The book explores refugee camps in Calais, Patras and Malta. It unveils the anonymous graves of unknown migrants in Ceuta, where a six-metre fence separates Europe from Africa. Along the way, Siegloff meets exceptional ordinary people, border officials from Cyprus to Spain and the technocrats in Warsaw overseeing the EU's external perimeters. He stumbles across a speaking parrot on Belgium's language border, and meets Father Christmas on the polar circle in Finland. On his tour de force across the continent, nobody wants a return to the old barriers, abolished by the Schengen agreement. Finally, the book raises a key question: does Europe still need its external borders? The book can be bought here
