Summary
The unprecedented crisis in global financial markets which struck the world economy in mid-2008 has led to the most severe recession since the Second World War. After many years of relatively high economic and employment growth, the global economic crisis has taken the EU back to growth levels not seen for decades and has had a negative impact on the labour markets of EU Member States. This study has been prepared within the framework of the European Union (EU)- funded IOM Independent Network of Labour Migration and Integration Experts (LINET). The Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities of the European Commission commissioned the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to conduct a study to assess the impact of the global economic crisis on migrants and migration policy in the EU. The study, Migration and the Economic Crisis: Implications for Policy in the European Union, is based primarily on a survey conducted by IOM offices in the 27 EU Member States and Croatia, Norway and Turkey, and seven commissioned country case studies (Czech Republic, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom). This report provides an overview of some of the key findings of the study. This document can be downloaded here
